Liadtee's sullen mood didn't change much over the next few days. Dalen didn't mention her outburst and she was too embarrassed to talk about it. Their relief eventually arrived, their next assignment a leisurely cruise back to Ekwis. Dalen had commented it would give her more time for rehabilitation, but though she had said nothing, that had not helped her mood. There was also an encrypted package from Mmunt, her jealousy resurfaced.
“What does he want?” She spat the words out like bitter frui ...More Read More

Dalen was putting the Lammisas through some basic manoeuvres. Around forty percent of the ship's systems had had to be replaced and it felt very different from before, he would need time to adjust. Inspector Mmunt was on board. Final checks he had told his superiors, so many replacements and upgrades it would pay for him to observe its first flight. The real reason was he wanted to talk with Ship and Pilot. Liadtee was laying in her bed, nervous at Mmunt's presence. She was still unable to walk ...More Read More

Inspector Mmunt examined the damage reports, it was bad, very bad. If it were any other ship, he'd order it scrapped and the pilot retired. But he had a soft spot for the Lammisas. He had been its first pilot, when it was commissioned. Its controller definitely had a personality, the conditioning was always imperfect, but in the Lammisas' case it seemed to have almost missed completely. Probably the reason it had lasted so long. He'd often thought a little less conditioning would make for bette ...More Read More

Time had passed quickly for Liadtee at Yumma, she smiled a lot. The warmth of another, the break in her solitude, these were things to be treasured. She hadn't noticed Dalen's mood, his withdrawn silences. He was glad of that. He watched her as she lay peacefully asleep, her restless nightmares seemed a thing of the past. He was grateful, he could not begrudge her a little joy, not really. He pushed his feelings back within himself and thought wistfully of might have beens.

Dalen watched as she lay sleeping, tossing and turning, tormented by restless dreams. He wished he could take them away, ease her mind somehow. 98PX-TY7 lay far behind them now, but it still haunted her. He wished he could lay next to her and cradle her in her sleep It had taken him a long time to recognise it for what it was, not something he'd experienced before. Soon the alarm would screech its shrill call and force her back to the waking world. He reached out and reset it, another hour, per ...More Read More

Liadtee wanted to spend more time exploring, but the heavy sulphurous air was beginning to weary her. Dalen was growing concerned as well “Liadtee, you don't know if the rest is safe. You've got lucky so far, but you should leave. And you still don't know if you can get out the same way you got in.”
“Just a few more rooms, then I'll go, promise.” She thought of weapons and stepped on to the pad. The pain was like a red hot poker forced through her eyes.

She woke with Dalen screaming at her ...More Read More

The third planet was a barren rock, aeons old, it may have been alive once, back when star was young. But the dying star would have long ago stripped it of its life giving blanket of air. They'd found the beam's scar easily enough. A giant three hundred kilometre gash across its face. Dalen was scanning every square centimetre of its surface. “Liadtee, do you believe in the Old Ones?”
The Book said Humans were the first species, the pinnacle of creation. Other races had been found, they'd alwa ...More Read More

Dalen gently steered the ship towards the Kamee, carefully nudging it forward. The closer they got the worse the feeling of unease became. They shouldn't be here, he knew that and he was sure Liadtee knew it too. He reached out and scanned the dead ship, there was nothing, no power, no life, it was just dead. He searched the system, seeking to find what could have killed it, he could find nothing.
“So Dalen, what have you got?”
“Nothing, absolutely nothing.”
Liadtee looked at the Kamee hangi ...More Read More

A few hours later, relief arrived bringing with their next assignment. “So where too next Dalen?”
“I'm not sure, I'm trying to figure it out now.”
She was baffled “What do you mean, trying to figure it out?”
“It's not a regular destination, just a set of coordinates, I'm trying to find it.”
“Why we going there?”
“No idea, doesn't say. Found it, the chart says it's called 98PX-TY7.”
“Well that's a fun sounding name.” She was dreading this, if Dalen had had to search for the place, the plot ...More Read More

Their next assignment had been Ekwis, a small colony dedicated to the pursuit of purity. The devoted believers there spent much of their time in quiet reflection. It had been utterly tedious, freighters rarely called and the most exciting thing was watching the solar flares from the bright blue star. From there they had moved to Leemtash, a sleepy agricultural settlement. At least it reasonably cheerful down there. It was a warm late autumn night over Leemtash's main town, they were holding the ...More Read More
