Steven Pinker is one of my favorite scholars next to Richard Dawkins, Neil Degrasse Tyson and Brian Greene. There are others, but Pinker really has me nodding my head when he speaks, and I've only recently rediscovered him via YouTube talking about a variety of topics which he manages to weave into an understandable tapestry.
I've gotten into heated exchanges with racists the net over about race, intelligence and various conspiracy theories Like a good objective arguer you have to consi

My neighbor asked me what was going on with my writing. I told her that I saw a lawyer (more than one in fact) and got the all clear to write what I want, but was not motivated for a variety of reasons. She made a guess that other people had similar ideas as my own.
No. Untrue. My ideas are original and my own.
I explained to her that when I was growing up the scifi gaming circle didn't have a whole lot of people in it, and, from what I understand, everyone seemed to know everyone els

DunDracon has been pretty neat, yet strangely uneventful. Lost of miniature games ... for some reason there seem to be fewer players overall than last year, but that could be because of the rain we've had.
There were fewer seminars, and what we've had have been on the so-so to borderline uninteresting side. That verse last year where there were some really interesting guests.
No Traveller games. One Ogre game, one Car Wars game, several Star Wars games, one wing devoted to Pathfinder

Nearly all commercial media today is psychologically engineered to inspire and warn. The days of someone writing something like "Treasure Island" or "A Christmas Carol" or any other pre 20th century title you can think of (before the big revolution in human behavioral science) are over.
Every time I see a situational comedy, every time I see a police drama with various subplots

Twin Islands map. JO side (Americans, Brits, Germans ... the usual), near Base A, or the most southerly base on the JO island, with a beachead that just out towards the "Rebels" map (Indonesian Islamic fundamentalists in this game).
During the game's height this location always saw a lot of action, even when JO side was pushing hard on the rebels to take their coastal base. For the time NOVALOGIC's Joint Operations' game was

So Thief 3 wasn't that great a game. As computer games expanded into the platform "video" game market, Thief 3 was ported to one or more of the consoles hoping to rope in the dumb-@$$ gamer who liked side scrollers, mindless action trash like Batman Arkham or sports junk. If I sound dismissive and perhaps angry about it, well, it's because I am.
Thief was essentially a solo D&D adventure where you actually had to use skill and think your way through an e

Eh, I've griped enough to everyone about everything.
Like I say, eventually I'm just going to stop coming here and posting altogether. When that happens, for whatever reason (assuming nature has taken its course with my life), do NOT list me as a missing friend.
In my attempts to find more adult oriented scifi that was not aimed at kids or teenagers, I tended to come across a lot of anime in the 80s. One film that my friends pointed me towards was "Crusher Joe".

"Crusher Joe", they said, "was just like Traveller". Eh, sure. It actually is after a fashion. Imagine if mag mag mag (our local Japanese Traveller artist here) took his artistic skills and applied them to a Traveller TV series. We might get somet

So, back in 1985 or 86 ... maybe 1987, Marc G. one of my gaming partners, point blank asked me "Wouldn't you like to do the things we do in Traveller?" or words to that effect.
To which I somewhat nervously replied an emphatic "No!" I was nervous not because he had discovered some deep, dark, homicidal hidden desire on my part, but that anyone would come up with such a suggestion of going into a town and shooting up the place (as occasionally happened when tracking bad guys or being chased
