The Kardashev scale of interstellar civilizations is, to be blunt, a load of crap. As I sit here at my desk watching the first game of the 1993 World Series (Blue Jays verse the Phillies) I think to myself how improbable, in fact impossible, it was that the Phillies beat the Braves to make it to the series, and yet somehow managed to do it anyway. I think that's kind of the thinking of the people who invest emotion into searching for extra terrestrials, and further invest themselves into thin ...More Read More

So, for the umpteenth time I've tried watching Space 1999, and where I'm more forgiving of the show's shortcomings, it is, in point of fact, just poorly written.--and even poorly directed on occasion.

I've harped on the show enough in this blog, but I think I've closed the door on this piece of 70's scifi forever. Again, a really good looking show with first class production values. The space shots, minus the Eagle sequences, are really spectacular. Those opening and closing credit sequen ...More Read More

There used to be a foam insecticide many years back that was highly effective, but no one makes it anymore. I think it was a Black Flag product. My backyard got flooded, and the ants tried to use a short cut over my carpet a couple weeks back. I sprayed the beasties, then wondered why my backyard was turning into a miniature lake. A few nights back I tracked down the culprit, the roof gutters were clogged with leaves, so I took my paint pole extension, and rammed it down the drain. There w ...More Read More

So, I'm watching my old DVDs about "The Elegant Universe" by Brian Greene, and listening about M-theory, superstrings and a lot of other stuff that I accept as mathematically interesting, but I personally question because of a lack of experimental evidence.

There may be things, creatures and what not living in parallel universes, but I'm not holding my breath. Theorizing about things is fun, and when you have the math to back it up it seems like you're onto something. But I can't help but t ...More Read More

This man expresses my thoughts on the old Drake Equation;

I remember in middle school drawing a facsimilie of Carl Sagan's depiction of the Drake Equation, and thinking to myself that I could unlock the secrets of "The COSMOS" and hence point to where and why life was on what other planets.

I was a kid.

But as I grew older I still clung onto the Drake Equation because Sagan's explanation of it in his TV series seemed to make sense to my young imp ...More Read More

I played both Mega Traveller computer games when I was in college, and thought them an interesting diversion. I never did finish the second one. I couldn't get into the ancient site for some reason. Some years later when I got net access (92? I can't remember), I scoured the fledgling net for some one who knew something, and got a text walk through. And even then I still couldn't finish the thing.

I liked the first game because it didn't have some of the crazy graphics that were ...More Read More

In 1996 and 1997 I attended the following event;

And in 1998 I was unable to get tickets, could not find out if the competition was happening or not, and received a series of paper letters from the organizer of the event (an ILM employee) and his backers, and I think the judge involved in the litigation between the money people and the guy who conceived the event. How tiresome I didn't want to hear about back door shenanigans.

Anyway, the result i ...More Read More

I can't believe that unpaid Federal Employees are, quite literally, weathering this arctic blast. I hate to sound like I'm bragging, because I'm not, but just the other day I was driving through San Francisco and over the Golden Gate Bridge with the windows rolled down, and my arm resting on the door.

I've been in awful winters the likes of which is currently going on, and I don't miss them for an instant. And where I've been snowed in a few times, having had to turn back because my toes ...More Read More

Remember this?

Again, not very Traveller related, but after the Wide World of Disney or whatever else was on Sunday evenings, this very cool intro would come on, and everytime I saw it I would think "wow, what a cool intro that is I wonder if there's any space ships and laser gun episodes in this thing?"

The parental unit watched this show and others religiously. No joke, she never missed an episode of this, Cannon, Barnaby Jones, the Rockford Files, Ban ...More Read More

Man, I love chocolate milk. Cookies and milk are another favorite, but, like my doctor told me, I can't eat like a teenager anymore. More's the pity. I've had some real good times with chocolate milk, milk shakes, and other associated beverages. Oh man is that stuff good.

What does this have to do with Traveller? Not a gerat deal, to be honest. I think I got some choc-milk stains on some character sheets on my old desk back in the day. And some chocolate stains on other things ... sc ...More Read More
