Today, one of my uncles passed away. He had struggled for a very long time with a rare illness (compounded by other, more mundane, illnesses and their medications), and my mother called yesterday (Sunday) to let me know he wasn't long for this world. He passed away this morning.

He was a pool builder for all the years I can remember (owned his own business - though I think he worked at Kaiser Aluminum before that), rode motorcycles until in his 50s (he and his wife), practically built my mom's fireplace himself (when she moved back home), and he just wouldn't quit. When the doctors were telling him to be more careful, he was bricking my mom's fireplace, or building his new house, or some other task he shouldn't have been doing "in his condition." One of his last trips to the hospital (last fall) was because he was sheetrocking his garage ceiling - by himself. That's something even a healthy person shouldn't do alone. But his wife had gone to bed, and he only had a couple more panels to put up.... He broke his nose and several other spots with the resulting fall.

One last thing. He came back to God a few years ago, and gave himself back to Christ. So, he died in peace, and I know I will see him again. I know his pain is finally gone, and he is waiting for the rest of us. God bless you Uncle Gene, God bless.
